When Ruben Meerman, an Australian science educator and former physicist-turned-TV personality lost 33 pounds, he wanted to find out where did his lost pounds go.

Thereafter, together with Andrew Brown, a lipid researcher at the University of New South Wales, Meerman researched and delved deep into ‘when somebody loses weight, where does the fat go’?

Their results were published on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, in The BMJ (formerly, the British Medical Journal). I quote a few lines from their results:

Our calculations show that the lungs are the primary excretory organ for fat. Losing weight requires unlocking the carbon stored in fat cells, thus reinforcing that often heard refrain of “eat less, move more.” We recommend these concepts be included in secondary school science curriculums and university biochemistry courses to correct widespread misconceptions about weight loss.

According to Meerman and Brown, when you burn a molecule of triglyceride, the predominant fat in a human body, the following equation takes place:

C55H104O6 + 78O2 —> 55CO2 + 52H2O + energy

C55H104O6 = Human Fat

O = Oxygen

CO2 = Carbon dioxide

H2O = Water

OMG! What’s this! I have not understood head or tail of whatever is written above; it is so complex!

Well…… it is a chemical equation for sure; I remember it from whatever chemistry I had learnt in high school.

Does this mean I need to understand chemistry to understand ‘where does fat go when you lose weight’?

NO… NO… NO… try to understand it as Meerman and Brown explain:

Complete oxidation of 10 kg of human fat requires 29 kg of inhaled oxygen producing 28 kg of CO2 and 11 kg of H2O.
